MediaTek is still mostly associated with budget Android phones, but it's making more inroads into flagships—and systems—and the latest chips could help on that front. The company has introduced the Dimensity 9200 chip which, among other claims, is announced as the first SoC to be WiFi 7 ready. You will need a phone with a compatible network chipset and a WiFi router to be compatible, but this apparently provides speeds of up to 6.5 Gbps to the device while improving reliability and reducing lag.
The Dimensity 9200 will also be the first mobile chip to use the ARMv9 Gen 2 architecture and be compatible with the new cores. A "big" Cortex-X3 core handles the most demanding tasks using three Cortex-A715 performance cores. The smaller Cortex-A510 cores help with battery life. The composite offers a slight 10-12% improvement over Dimensity 9000 in synthetic testing, but is said to reduce energy consumption by up to 25%.
Great speed comes with graphics. The Dimensity 9200 is one of the first chips to use ARM's new Immortalis-G715 GPU, bringing hardware tracing, Triple Triangle integration, and greater performance. It's up to 32% faster than Dimensity 9000's GPU while using 41% less power, just like MediaTek. Other upgrades are more subtle, but still useful. Unlike most MediaTek chips, the 9200 supports both sub-6GHz and 5G millimeter waves to transfer mobile data faster around the world. The Imagiq 890 image processor is the first to support an RGBW camera sensor, guaranteeing more brightness and detail in photos than regular RGB. It can also prevent motion sickness. You can also expect support for faster UFS 4.0 storage, the latest LPDDR5X memory (8.5Gbps), and 24-bit/192KHz audio.
The first phones using the Dimensity 9200 will be available in late 2022. That won't make Qualcomm sweat, especially with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powerhouse on the horizon. However, it can put MediaTek in premium phones - and that's good for choice and competition.
